Fourth Oudtshoorn Sport Festival Kicks Off PDF Print E-mail

sportfestival2013OUDTSHOORN – The fourth Oudtshoorn Sport Festival took-off as hundreds of sports men and women converge in the heart of the little Karoo to partake in the 8-day action-packed sport festival consisting of 14 sport codes.

“The Oudtshoorn Sport Festival which forms an integral part of the Councils objective of making Oudtshoorn the sport Mecca of the Southern Cape and Little Karoo region, is also aligned to the town’s Vision 2030: ‘A TOWN TO WORK, LEARN PLAY AND PROSPER IN’”, said the Executive Mayor Aldm Gordon April.

sport_festival_2012_smallSport fanatics within the Greater Oudtshoorn and sorroundings can brace themselves for much more exciting sporting action as the 3rd Oudtshoorn Sport Festival, kicks-off on Thursday, 21 June 2012.  

The launch of this sport tourism event which comprises approximately 3000 participants this year compared to 2500 last year, was held on Friday, 15 June 2012 in a glittering event to officially set this 10-day action-packed sporting event in motion.

This year’s Oudtshoorn Sport Festival which takes place between 21 June and 01 July 2012, features the following sport games and championshiops; Inte-Provincial Gymnastics, Western Cape Karate Championship, Western Cape Development and Provincial Boxing Tournament, Western Cape Schools Table Tennis Tournament, Western Cape Development Netball Tournament, Inter-Provincial Martial Arts, SA Junior Inter-Provincial Cycling, Western Cape Regional Football, Inter-club Action Cricket, ASWD/Oudtshoorn Road Running Challenge and Latin Dance and Ballroom (World Trials).

Financial support for the festival has equally grown as the Oudtshoorn Municipality secured two additional sponsorships for the festival. Standard Bank which has always been financially supporting the festival has again joined hands with the municipality to support this year’s festival. New sponsors to the festival are the Western Cape Pronvincial Government and Petro SA.

sf_end_smallThe second Oudtshoorn Sport Festival which displayed action and fun filled ten day sporting festivity with more than 2700 participants who converged in Oudtshoorn from 23 June to 02 July, was a resounding success.

The sport festival ended on a high note as 600 ballroom dancers battled it out in the Federation of Dance Sport South Africa (FEDANSA) Western Cape Championships with also participants from the Northern Cape.  The 15-hour ballroom dance competition which was held in jam-packed De Jager Indoor Sport Centre.  Other sport codes were Gymnastics (620 participants), karate (400), table tennis (100), cycling (450), 7’s rugby (120), soccer (220), action cricket (140), ballroom and netball with 77 participants.
